Sharjah airport to Abu Dhabi transfer: three emirates, one car

Land at Sharjah International with an Abu Dhabi address and you’ve picked the longest run from SHJ: about 179 km to the Corniche, through the whole length of Dubai. Of the intercity airport routes we drive, it’s where a fixed fare matters most: a meter would run for two hours.

Send your flight number and hotel on WhatsApp for a fixed fare. The driver tracks the flight and waits in the meet and greet area described on our Sharjah airport transfer page.

The route: down the inland side of Dubai

From the airport the car joins the E311, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, crosses into Dubai and runs south-west down the inland side of the city. Emirates Road (E611) runs parallel further out, and the driver takes whichever is moving better.

Near the Abu Dhabi border the E311 passes Dubai South, where Al Maktoum International and Expo City Dubai sit close to the road. In Abu Dhabi emirate the same line continues as Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Street. Yas Island comes up first, about 7 km from Zayed International Airport. The Corniche is about 30 km further on.

Salik and Darb: why the inland road matters

Sharjah charges private cars nothing. Dubai’s ten Salik gates sit on Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Khail Road, Al Ittihad Road, the creek crossings and the Airport Tunnel. None is on the E311, so a run that stays inland normally pays no Salik.

Since 4 May 2026 the Ghantoot gate on the E11 has charged AED 4 a crossing at any hour, and Abu Dhabi’s transport authority names Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Street as the toll-free alternative. The four older gates sit on the bridges onto Abu Dhabi island (Sheikh Zayed, Sheikh Khalifa, Al Maqtaa and Mussafah) and charge AED 4 from 07:00 to 09:00 and 15:00 to 19:00, except Sundays and public holidays. A Corniche address usually means one of those bridges. Yas doesn’t.

The Salik and Darb toll guide has the full rules, and your WhatsApp fare stays fixed either way.

Sharjah airport to Abu Dhabi timing by hour and day

When you land Sharjah and Dubai stretch Abu Dhabi end What we plan
Weekdays, 6-10am Heaviest: you travel with Sharjah’s commuters into Dubai Bridge gates charge 07:00-09:00 2 hr 15 - 2 hr 30
Weekdays, 10am-3pm Usually the easiest window Bridges free until 15:00 about 2 hr
Friday midday Prayer at 12:45, slower near mosques Bridges free at midday about 2 hr, small margin
Weekdays, 3-8pm Dubai’s Salik peak runs 4-8pm, a fair sign the city is full Bridge gates charge 15:00-19:00 2 hr 15 - 2 hr 30
Any day, 1-6am Emptiest roads Bridges free; Ghantoot still charges close to 1 hr 55
Sundays Government weekend across the UAE No bridge charges all day 2 hr - 2 hr 15

These are planning estimates built on OpenStreetMap’s clear-road 116 minutes and on the toll hours, which track when the roads fill. Respect the morning: on 6 January 2026, a back-to-school day, Gulf News reported heavy Sharjah-to-Dubai queues and diversions onto Al Dhaid Road, the airport’s own road.

Where Abu Dhabi drop-offs go

Yas Island is the quick one: Yas Marina Circuit, Ferrari World, Etihad Arena and the Yas Plaza hotels. The Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix runs there in early December (3-6 December 2026 in most calendars), and ADNEC hosts ADIPEC from 2 to 5 November 2026, so book those weeks early. On the island, drops are mostly Corniche hotels, Emirates Palace and Al Maryah Island, home to ADGM. For a car once you’re there, our chauffeur service in Abu Dhabi runs by the hour.

Coach, taxi or private car from SHJ?

Air Arabia lists a coach to Abu Dhabi on Sharjah Airport’s transport page. We couldn’t confirm its current times or Abu Dhabi stop, so check there. It suits a solo traveller on a budget.

Sharjah Taxi runs the meter plus its AED 20 airport surcharge, at rates reset against fuel prices. Over 179 km, plus any Darb, the total is hard to predict, which is why our intercity transfer service quotes a fixed fare.

If your airline also flies to Dubai, compare the Dubai airport to Abu Dhabi transfer: DXB to the Corniche is about 163 km.

The return run to Sharjah airport

Going back, leave the island before 07:00 or after 09:00 and the bridge gate is free. We have no reliable figures for the evening flow from Dubai into Sharjah, so for an evening Air Arabia departure we plan the full two and a half hours, plus check-in.

Which car for two and a half hours

Up to three business travellers with two cases ride well in a Mercedes E-Class, or the S-Class with a client. A family with four large cases needs a GMC Yukon Denali, and five cases means a Mercedes V-Class. Children under four must ride in a child seat under UAE law, so tell us their ages when you book.

Sharjah Airport (SHJ) to Abu Dhabi: questions

How far is Sharjah airport from Abu Dhabi?

About 179 km to the Abu Dhabi Corniche, mostly on the E311 and its continuation, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Street. OpenStreetMap routing gives 116 minutes with clear roads, and we plan 2 hours to 2 hours 30 depending on the hour. Yas Island, on the near side of the city, is about 30 km shorter.

How far is Sharjah airport from Abu Dhabi airport?

Zayed International sits on the mainland, on the Dubai side of Abu Dhabi and about 36 km short of the Corniche, so the airport-to-airport run is noticeably shorter than the 179 km city figure. For scale, Dubai International to Zayed International is about 132 km. If you're connecting, send both flight numbers and we'll plan the timing.

How much is a taxi from Sharjah airport to Abu Dhabi?

Sharjah Taxi charges by the meter from the airport rank, plus an AED 20 airport surcharge, and its per-km rate moves with fuel prices. Over 179 km that adds up, and any Darb gates come on top. We quote one fixed fare for the car you choose on WhatsApp, so you know the total before you land.

Is there public transport from Sharjah airport to Abu Dhabi?

Sharjah airport has no metro or rail station. Air Arabia lists a coach from the airport to Abu Dhabi alongside its Dubai, Al Ain and Ras Al Khaimah services. Check the times and the Abu Dhabi stop on the airport's transport page before you rely on it, because the page isn't dated.

Is it better to fly into Abu Dhabi instead of Sharjah?

If your airline offers both, usually yes. Zayed International is about 7 km from Yas Island and 36 km from the Corniche, against 179 km from Sharjah. SHJ makes sense when it's the only airport your airline serves or the flight times suit you better. We meet you at arrivals either way.

Can you pick us up at Sharjah airport at night for Abu Dhabi?

Yes. We answer bookings 24 hours a day and track the flight. Night is the quickest time for this trip: the roads are at their emptiest between 1am and 6am, and the Abu Dhabi bridge gates don't charge. Only the Ghantoot gate on the E11 charges round the clock, and the inland road avoids it.
