Dubai airport to Ras Al Khaimah transfer: the drive in brief
Of all the UAE transfer routes we run out of DXB, this is the one where the airport’s own marketing misleads people most. RAK Tourism still quotes a 45-minute drive. OpenStreetMap routing on empty roads gives 78 minutes from Terminal 3 to Al Marjan Island and 86 minutes to RAK city.
Your driver waits in the arrivals hall with a name board, as on any pickup at Dubai International, and we track the flight so a late landing doesn’t cost you the car. You get 60 minutes of free waiting.
The road north: Airport Tunnel, E311 and four borders
From Terminal 3 the car leaves through the Airport Tunnel onto Beirut Street, passes Al Twar and Muhaisnah, then joins the E311, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road. It crosses into Sharjah at Muweilah, runs past University City and Sharjah airport, then through Ajman and Umm Al Quwain before Ras Al Khaimah.
The Airport Tunnel is a Salik gate and usually the only toll of the trip. The E311 has no Salik gates, and none of the northern emirates toll private cars. Our guide to Salik and Darb tolls has the full Dubai gate list.
E311 or Emirates Road (E611)?
The E311 is the shorter line from DXB and our default. Emirates Road, the E611, runs parallel further inland, outside the cities. When the E311 is backed up near the Sharjah border, the driver may switch to it, and we make that call on the day from live traffic. Inside Ras Al Khaimah, the E611 is also the road that heads inland towards Jais Road and the mountain.
Where Ras Al Khaimah drop-offs go
| Drop-off | From DXB T3 | Clear-road time | What’s there |
|---|---|---|---|
| Al Marjan Island | 79 km | 78 min | Movenpick with its floating water park, Banan Beach glamping, the Wynn site |
| Al Hamra | close to Al Marjan | close to Al Marjan | Al Hamra Golf Club, Al Hamra International Exhibition and Conference Center |
| RAK city (Dafan Al Nakheel) | 101 km | 86 min | City hotels, National Museum of Ras Al Khaimah |
| RAK International Airport | 101 km | 85 min | Onward flights from RKT |
| Jais Flight base, Jebel Jais | 147 km | 134 min | Zipline, viewing deck, 1484 by Puro |
Al Hamra sits a few kilometres inland of Al Marjan Island, so the two drives are close in length. Mina Al Arab, home to the InterContinental and Anantara, is on the same stretch of coast. RAK city traffic leaves the E311 at Khuzam Road. Wynn Al Marjan Island is now due to open in September 2027.
If you’re staying a while and want a driver for days out, our Ras Al Khaimah chauffeur service covers the emirate.
Dubai airport to Ras Al Khaimah by time of day
The documented queues run from Sharjah into Dubai in the weekday morning, so a 7am landing at DXB drives against them. Evening is less clear: we’ve found no reliable figures for the flow out of Dubai, so for a landing between 4pm and 8pm we plan the top of the range, close to two hours to RAK city.
Between 1am and 6am Salik is free and the E311 runs near its clear-road time. On Fridays, prayer is at 12:45, so allow a little extra near mosques around midday.
Going back to DXB, the morning is the harder direction: plan up to two hours from RAK city before 10am, plus check-in.
Taxi, shuttle or a booked car from DXB to RAK
A Dubai Taxi from the rank runs on the meter for 100 km, with Salik, waiting time and an AED 20 surcharge for passing through Sharjah on top. A RAK Shuttle has been reported from Terminals 1 and 3, and RAKTA runs Dubai to RAK buses, but we couldn’t confirm times on an official page, so ring 8001700 first.
One traveller with a backpack and time to spare can try the bus. With children, golf bags or a 2am landing, book a car, the same way as our other intercity transfers.
Staying on Al Marjan Island? Sharjah airport is about 18 km closer by road, so the Sharjah airport to Ras Al Khaimah transfer is worth a look if your airline flies there.
Adding Jebel Jais
Jebel Jais is the UAE’s highest peak at 1,934 m, usually about 10 C cooler than the coast, and best from October to April. The road up has hairpin bends and regular pull-ins. Going straight from DXB to the Jais Flight base is about 147 km and over two hours on clear roads. Most guests check in first and go up another morning: RAK city to the base is about 51 km. Ask and we’ll quote the extra leg.
Which car for the DXB to RAK run
Two people with two large cases ride well in a Lexus ES. Four adults with four big suitcases or golf bags need the GMC Yukon Denali. A family of six with a pushchair should take the Mercedes V-Class, which carries five large cases, and a group of ten fits a Toyota HiAce. Child seats are available on request.
