How an Al Maktoum airport transfer works
Al Maktoum International, the airport most people call DWC, is Dubai’s second airport. It sits in Jebel Ali, about 37 km southwest of the city and 62 km by road from Dubai International. Booking works the way it does at every UAE airport we serve: send your flight number and drop-off address on WhatsApp, agree a fixed fare, and your driver meets you inside with a name board. You get 60 minutes of free waiting and we track the flight.
What’s different here is distance. From DWC, most Dubai hotels are 35 to 75 minutes away by car, and there’s no Metro at the terminal. A fare agreed before you fly takes the meter out of a long drive.
Arriving at DWC: one terminal, short walks
DWC has a single passenger terminal with 24 gates and room for about 26.5 million passengers a year. It handled just over 1.1 million in 2024, so the halls feel nothing like DXB. Flights are mostly low-cost, charter and seasonal. Between January and September 2025, the CIS countries were the biggest market (497,000 of 915,000 passengers), ahead of the GCC and Western Europe, according to the Dubai Airports fact file.
The airport has 98 remote stands, so you may well ride a bus from the aircraft to the terminal. Then it’s passport control, bags and customs, and out into the arrivals hall, where your driver waits with your name on a board. Dubai Airports doesn’t publish an official meeting point for DWC, so we keep it simple: inside, at the customs exit. Parking is free here, and the car sits in one of 2,500 shaded spaces close to the door. Our meet and greet page sets out the name-board routine at every airport.
Flight timing quirks at Al Maktoum
The airline line-up has thinned this year and keeps changing. A travel site that checked the official board on 9 October 2026 found only a couple of scheduled carriers listed, with others seasonal or resuming. Flights get added, dropped and moved between DWC and DXB, so confirm the airport the day before. If your flight moves to DXB, tell us: that’s a different pickup 62 km away.
The same site reported that the main runway closes for maintenance on Mondays from 3pm to 6pm UAE time. DWC has one runway until the second opens (due by the end of 2027), so nothing lands in that window. We track the flight either way.
Getting from DWC to Dubai Marina, Downtown and Expo City
DWC is at the southwest end of Dubai, so the map runs the opposite way to DXB. Dubai Marina and JLT are the closest big hotel districts, 37-38 km up Sheikh Zayed Road, and Palm Jumeirah is about 45 km. Downtown is the long one: about 54 km via Emirates Road and Umm Suqeim Street, 46 minutes on an empty road and past an hour at peak. For district-by-district detail, see our Al Maktoum airport to Dubai transfer.
Expo City is the exception, about 20 km from DWC against 47 km from DXB. That matters in the autumn show season. Automechanika Dubai runs at the Dubai Exhibition Centre in Expo City from 10 to 12 November 2026, and GITEX Global’s exhibition moves there for 8 to 11 December 2026. If you can pick your airport for a show, our DWC vs DXB guide compares the two. The Dubai Airshow is also held at the DWC site in odd-numbered years.
The table’s first figure is the empty-road time from OpenStreetMap routing (run on 12 October 2026); the second allows for ordinary traffic. If you’re staying on for meetings, our chauffeur service in Dubai keeps the car and driver by the hour.
Taxi or bus from Al Maktoum airport?
There’s no Metro station at DWC. Dubai Airports says to connect by RTA bus or taxi through the Ibn Battuta and Expo 2020 Metro stations. The airport’s taxi page names route F55 to the Expo station and N55 to Ibn Battuta, each every 30 minutes, but older reports give different timings, so check the RTA journey planner first. Bus, then Metro, then a walk, with two large suitcases, is a long first evening.
Taxis are run by Dubai Taxi, and at DWC they’re ordered through the Bolt app, according to the airport’s own page. Dubai Taxi’s airport tariff starts at AED 20 (AED 25 for a van) and adds AED 2.62 per km. On a 54 km run to Downtown that adds up, and the meter keeps going in traffic. Fixing the fare before you land is the main argument for booking at DWC.
From DWC to Abu Dhabi or across to DXB
DWC is on the Abu Dhabi side of Dubai. Zayed International Airport is about 87 km away and the Abu Dhabi Corniche about 117 km, roughly 62 and 78 minutes on clear roads. On the E11 corridor, the Darb gate at Ghantoot has charged AED 4 a crossing around the clock since 4 May 2026. Our Al Maktoum airport to Abu Dhabi transfer has the route detail.
Connecting to a flight at DXB means clearing passport control, collecting your bags and crossing the city. Don’t count on a free shuttle: Dubai Airports ran free buses between the airports only during the DXB runway closures of 2019 and 2022. The same drive in the other direction is covered on our DXB to Al Maktoum airport transfer page.
Is DWC going to replace Dubai International?
That’s the plan. In April 2024 Dubai approved designs for a new AED 128 billion passenger terminal at DWC, and all DXB operations are due to move there. The full scheme has five runways and an eventual capacity of 260 million passengers. The first phase, sized for 150 million, is scheduled for the early 2030s, with Phase 1 completion reported for 2032. Before that, The National reports a second runway by the end of 2027 and flydubai possibly moving five or six aircraft across as early as 2027. Until then, DWC stays small and quiet.
Which car for a DWC arrival
If you’re landing on a charter with family or a group, book a van rather than squeezing into a sedan for a 40-minute drive. The Mercedes V-Class seats six with five large cases, a Toyota HiAce takes ten with seven, and a Mercedes Sprinter carries twelve. A business traveller heading to an Expo City show, with one case and a laptop bag, is fine in a Mercedes E-Class or Lexus ES. Child seats are available on request.
