How a Sharjah airport transfer works
Send us your flight number, the drop-off address and how many suitcases you have on WhatsApp, and we reply with a fixed fare. We track the flight, and your driver waits with a name board in the meet and greet area Sharjah Airport sets aside for people collecting arrivals. It’s how we run pickups at every airport we cover in the UAE, with 60 minutes of free waiting.
The terminal is the easy part. The road out is what needs planning. If you’re going on to Dubai, you’re joining one of the most congested corridors in the country at rush hour, so plan the pickup around that, not around the 16 km into central Sharjah.
Arriving at Sharjah International
SHJ has a single passenger terminal and is Air Arabia’s home base. The Sharjah Airport Authority counted 19.48 million passengers in 2025 across more than 100 destinations, so it’s busy, but there’s only one hall to find. After immigration, check the screens for your baggage belt. Trolleys are free, porters are available for a charge, and lost and found is in the baggage claim area.
Then walk out to Arrivals. Sharjah Airport publishes a dedicated meet and greet area tied to its Premium Arrival Parking, and that’s where your driver stands with your name on a board. If a relative is collecting you instead, short-term parking at SHJ starts at AED 16 for the first hour, VAT included.
If you need help before customs, Sharjah Airport’s own Hala Services sells meet and assist inside the terminal, aimed at passengers with reduced mobility, older travellers and children flying alone (Meet Assist line +971 6 514 1251). That’s airport staff, airside. Our driver takes over in the hall, and our meet and greet service page explains what that covers.
The building is growing, too. An AED 2.4 billion expansion is meant to lift capacity to 25 million passengers a year, with completion given as some point in 2027. For the layout, facilities and lounges, read our Sharjah airport guide.
The Sharjah to Dubai rush hour
With empty roads, SHJ to Downtown Dubai is about 33 minutes. In the morning peak it isn’t.
Gulf News described the 6 January 2026 back-to-school morning: heavy congestion at the Al Nahda and Al Wahda Street border points, queues building on Sharjah Ring Road and Al Dhaid Road as drivers diverted, and Al Khail Road adding roughly 15-20 minutes. Al Dhaid Road is the airport’s own road into the city. The main routes into Dubai are Al Ittihad Road and the E311 Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road. In September 2026 the RTA added a lane and retimed signals at the Al Qiyadah intersection on Al Ittihad Road, and expects up to 15% less waiting at peak.
What we’d do: if you land in the morning rush and you’re heading into Dubai, plan on the top of the range in the drive-time table, and don’t book a 10am meeting off an 8am landing. Late at night the same run usually comes close to the empty-road time.
Two local quirks. Sharjah’s government works Monday to Thursday and takes Friday to Sunday off, while government offices elsewhere in the UAE open on Friday mornings. And Friday prayer falls around 12:45 this year, so allow a little extra near mosques at midday on Fridays.
Sharjah has no road tolls for private cars. Salik only starts once you’re into Dubai.
Getting to Sharjah city, Ajman and Dubai
The airport is about 13 km east-southeast of Sharjah city. The Central Souq (the Blue Souk) is 16 km by road and Al Majaz about 17 km, both via Al Dhaid Road and Al Wahda Street, with University City around 21 km. Expo Centre Sharjah, on Al Taawun Street in Al Khan, is about 22 km, and the 45th Sharjah International Book Fair runs there from 4 to 15 November 2026. If you’re staying in Sharjah, our chauffeur service in Sharjah covers local trips after you land.
Central Sharjah is about as far from DXB as from SHJ: 17-22 km by road from either. So for a Sharjah address, traffic direction decides which airport is quicker. Ajman is different. It has no airport, and SHJ is the closer one by some way.
For Dubai, Deira is 29 km, Downtown 38 km and Dubai Marina 57 km. Our Sharjah airport to Dubai transfer page goes district by district.
North, Ras Al Khaimah city is about 85 km up the E311. Al Marjan Island is 61 km from SHJ against 79 km from DXB, which makes Sharjah a real option for RAK beach resorts; see our Sharjah airport to Ras Al Khaimah route. Abu Dhabi is the long one at 179 km, nearly two hours on clear roads and straight through Dubai, covered on the Sharjah airport to Abu Dhabi transfer page.
In the table, the first figure is the empty-road time from OpenStreetMap routing (run on 12 October 2026) and the second allows for ordinary traffic. Into Dubai in the morning, treat the second as a floor.
Sharjah airport taxi, Air Arabia coach or a booked car?
Sharjah Taxi runs the ranks at the arrivals level 24 hours a day. Taxis are metered, with an AED 20 airport surcharge on every trip that starts at the airport, and there are family and ladies-only taxis, plus Sharjah Taxi limousines outside Arrivals (bookings on 600 525 252). Sharjah sets its meter rates against fuel prices, so we won’t quote a per-km figure that could already be out of date.
Air Arabia runs coaches from the airport to Dubai’s Al Ghurair Centre (8am to 11.30pm, AED 20 single) and to Ras Al Khaimah (8am to midnight, AED 30), plus Abu Dhabi and Al Ain. Those figures come from the airport’s transport page, which isn’t dated, so check before you rely on them.
Our view: a solo traveller with one case heading to Al Majaz at midday should take the rank. A family of five going to Dubai Marina at 8am, on a meter, through the border queues, should book.
Which car to book for a Sharjah pickup
For one to three people with two large cases, a Lexus ES or Mercedes E-Class is plenty for the short runs into Sharjah and Ajman. More bags than that, or more people, and you need a van. The Hyundai Staria seats seven with four large cases, the Mercedes V-Class six with five, and a Toyota HiAce takes ten with seven. On a long morning crawl into Dubai, the extra room is worth it. Child seats are available on request; tell us the children’s ages when you book.
