What we will and won’t do off the tarmac
We drive roads. That includes the Jebel Jais mountain road, the mountain roads around Hatta and the sand-blown lanes into desert camps near Al Qudra. We don’t drive on dunes. That’s a job for a licensed desert safari operator, and we’re happy to drop you at their meeting point.
Inside the cabin
The Land Cruiser is more upright and practical inside than a Range Rover or an Escalade. UAE dealers list seven-seat versions, and higher grades add ventilated rear seats, which you’ll want on a July afternoon. Toyota UAE currently lists two engines: a 4.0 litre V6 with 271 hp and a 3.5 litre twin-turbo V6 with 409 hp and 650 Nm. Both are four-wheel drive.
Luggage: carry people or carry bags
You choose. With the third row folded, four passengers travel with about three large cases and day bags. Raise the third row and six can ride, but only with small bags. For a mountain day trip that’s fine. For an airport run with suitcases, keep it to four.
