Hiring a chauffeur in Dubai: the checklist before you book

Before hiring a chauffeur in Dubai, check that the company holds an RTA permit for passenger transport by luxury vehicles, that the driver carries an RTA professional practice permit, and that the fare, waiting time and cancellation terms are in writing. Dubai rules also say a limousine may only carry passengers who booked in advance.

The short version: book a licensed company, get everything in writing, and know what happens if your flight runs late. This checklist is what we’d tell a friend comparing quotes for a chauffeur service in Dubai, including us. All our cars are RTA-licensed and fully legal for chauffeur hire.

Chauffeur bookings that go wrong tend to share a pattern. A price agreed in a voice note. A car described as “S-Class or similar”. Nobody able to say what happens when your flight lands 40 minutes late at Terminal 3. Each item below closes one of those gaps.

Hiring a chauffeur in Dubai: the 12-point checklist

  1. The company is licensed for passenger transport by luxury motor vehicles, and holds an RTA permit for it.
  2. The driver holds an RTA professional practice permit.
  3. The booking is confirmed in advance, in your name.
  4. The fare is fixed and written down, including whether Salik tolls and airport parking are in it.
  5. The car class and model are named. If the model year matters to you, ask for it.
  6. The free waiting time is stated, and you know when the clock starts.
  7. Your flight number is taken and tracked for airport pickups.
  8. Cancellation terms are in writing.
  9. Child seats are confirmed, if you need them.
  10. You can reach a person at 3am if the car isn’t there.
  11. The driver speaks a language you’re comfortable with.
  12. You can get a receipt, and a tax invoice if you need one.

How to check a chauffeur company’s RTA licence

In Dubai, chauffeur and limousine firms operate under an RTA activity called “Passenger Transport by Luxury Motor Vehicles”. The rules sit in Executive Council Resolution No. 6 of 2016 and its Executive Regulation No. 516 of 2022. A company first needs a trade licence from the Department of Economy and Tourism or a free zone, and then a permit from the RTA’s Public Transport Agency (RTA activity card).

That permit has teeth. The RTA sets which vehicle categories a firm may run, how many cars, their maximum age, and requires the company’s booking systems to link to the RTA platform.

We know of no public RTA search where you can type in a company name and see its permit. So you check it in steps:

  1. Ask for a copy of the trade licence. Look for the activity name, the company’s legal name and the expiry date. The legal name should match the name on your quote and invoice.
  2. Ask whether the company holds the RTA permit for that activity. A licensed operator answers this without hesitation.
  3. Ask the driver to show their permit. Dubai drivers of luxury vehicles need an RTA professional practice permit, issued digitally through the RTA’s Dubai Drive app since 2023 (RTA, October 2023). Inspectors can ask to see it, and so can you.
  4. If the company charges VAT, check its tax registration number with the Federal Tax Authority’s public TRN verification tool (FTA).
  5. Ask for a trip receipt. RTA rules require drivers to give one on request.

No single step proves a company is licensed. An operator that dodges two or three of them is telling you something.

Insurance: the narrower question

Every car needs valid insurance to be registered in the UAE, so asking “are you insured?” gets you a yes every time. The useful question is narrower: does the policy cover this car for paid passenger work, and who pays if your luggage is damaged?

Get the answer in writing. A licensed operator can give it. A private driver using a personal car usually can’t, and the RTA treats paid rides in unlicensed private cars as illegal passenger transport, with heavy fines and the car liable to be impounded.

A fixed fare in writing

With us, you send pickup, drop-off, date, time and flight number on WhatsApp, and we reply with a fixed fare for the car you chose. Whichever company you use, the written quote should name:

  • pickup and drop-off addresses, date and time
  • the flight number, for airport pickups
  • the car class or model, and the number of passengers and bags
  • the free waiting time at the airport and at other pickups
  • whether Salik or Darb tolls and parking are included
  • the price of extra stops or extra hours

Tolls are the line most often left vague. Our guide to Salik and Darb tolls explains which routes pass a gate.

One more test. The RTA’s activity card says licensed luxury transport companies must charge above the taxi tariff. So a “limousine” quote that undercuts a metered taxi on the same trip deserves a second look. Our taxi vs private transfer comparison shows what each option includes.

Vehicle age, model and “or similar”

The RTA caps the age of cars a licensed limousine firm may run, but we haven’t found a published figure you could hold a company to. Ask for the model and the model year instead.

Then pin down “or similar”. It should mean the same class, the same number of seats and the same boot space. An “S-Class or similar” that turns up as a mid-size sedan isn’t similar. Our fleet page lists each class, and the guide to choosing a car by passengers and luggage shows what fits where.

Driver language and conduct

If you need a driver who speaks a particular language, ask before you book rather than at the kerb. Many chauffeurs in Dubai work in more than one language, but no company can promise every language on every shift.

The conduct basics are set by RTA rules: uniform or an appropriate appearance, no smoking in the car, hands-free phone use only, and help with loading your bags when you ask. For what to expect beyond the rules, see our guide to chauffeur etiquette and tipping.

Flight tracking and waiting time

Give your flight number with every airport booking. A company that tracks it can move the pickup when you land early or late, without you sending a message from the jet bridge.

Then ask how much free waiting you get and when it starts. Published airport allowances among UAE operators range from 30 to 90 minutes, and 60 is the most common. Ours is 60 minutes free at the airport and 15 minutes at hotels and homes, with the driver in arrivals holding a name board. At Dubai International (DXB), a long immigration queue or a slow baggage belt can use up a short allowance before you reach the hall. Our guide to flight delays and pickup waiting time goes through the timings.

Cancellation terms

Published free-cancellation windows among UAE operators run from 12 to 48 hours before pickup. That’s a wide spread, so get the exact terms in writing before you pay anything.

Also ask what happens if your flight is cancelled, rescheduled to the next day or diverted. A Dubai flight diverted to Al Maktoum International changes the pickup completely; see DWC vs DXB for how far apart the two airports are.

Child seats

UAE rules require a child seat for children under 4, and in 2018 the RTA told Dubai taxi and limousine companies to keep a child seat available at all times. Don’t assume one will be in the car. We provide child seats on request, so state the child’s age when you book, and confirm it again the day before.

Red flags when hiring a chauffeur in Dubai

Walk away, or at least slow down, if you see any of these:

  • Someone in the arrivals hall offers you a “limo” with no booking. In Dubai a luxury vehicle may only collect pre-booked passengers, and breaking that rule is an AED 400 fine for a first offence.
  • The price is “decided after the trip”.
  • The only contact is a mobile number and a first name, with no company name on the quote.
  • They won’t send a trade licence copy or give a receipt.
  • The car that arrives is a lower class than you booked, and nobody told you.
  • The driver asks you to sit in the front and say you’re a friend if anyone asks.

Hiring for a day, a week or a month

For a day of meetings or sightseeing, an hourly chauffeur booking keeps the same car and driver with you between stops. If you’re booking for colleagues, visiting clients or a roadshow, start with our corporate chauffeur service.

For longer hires, the RTA introduced the Takamul permit in March 2025. It lets licensed limousine firms and car rental companies work together so that residents and visitors can hire a luxury car with a chauffeur for up to one month, with the contract registered with the RTA (RTA announcement). If someone offers you a monthly car with driver, ask how it’s licensed.

When you’re ready, send us your pickup, drop-off, date, time and flight number on WhatsApp at +971 58 181 0789. We’ll reply with a fixed fare, in writing, for the car that fits.

Questions travellers ask

Is it legal to book a chauffeur on WhatsApp in Dubai?

Yes. The booking channel does not matter to the RTA. What matters is that the operator is licensed for luxury passenger transport and that the ride is booked before pickup. A WhatsApp booking with a written fare, your name and the pickup details is a proper prior booking. A stranger offering a ride at the kerb is not.

Can a company from another emirate pick me up at Dubai airport?

It can, with conditions. Under the RTA Naqel permit, a company licensed in its own emirate may collect passengers in luxury vehicles from Dubai airports, but only with a prior reservation in the passenger's name and an RTA permit. Carrying passengers before getting that permit is an AED 5,000 fine.

How far ahead should I book a chauffeur in Dubai?

Book as soon as your flight and hotel are fixed. We answer bookings 24 hours a day, so short-notice requests are fine. In busy weeks such as New Year or a big trade show, booking early gives you the widest choice of cars. Even for a same-day trip, the booking must be in place before the car collects you.

Should a chauffeur cost more than a taxi in Dubai?

Yes. The RTA requires licensed luxury transport companies to charge above the taxi tariff, so a chauffeur fare for the same trip should be higher than a metered taxi. What you get for the difference is a pre-booked car, a fixed price, a named meeting point and a driver who waits. A limo quote below the taxi fare is a warning sign.

What should I do if the car that arrives is not the one I booked?

Before you load the bags, check the car against your written confirmation and message the company straight away. A different car of the same class may be acceptable to you. A lower class, fewer seats or a smaller boot is not what you paid for, and the company should fix it or adjust the fare before you set off.

Can I hire the same chauffeur for several days?

Yes. For multi-day trips, book an hourly or full-day package for each day and ask for the same driver and car. Companies working under the RTA Takamul permit can also offer a luxury car with a chauffeur for up to one month, with the rental contract registered with the RTA.
